【Kyoto】5 Must-See temple with Japanese gardens and maccha tea
As you may know, Kyoto has a long history and is home to many temples,
Among them, there are temples where you can not only visit but also experience and drink maccha tea.
Here are some recommendations for those who want to enjoy a relaxing maccha tea while gazing at a Japanese garden!
1. Sanzen-in 三千院
An hour’s bus ride from Kyoto, Sanzen-in is a 1200-year-old power spot in Kyoto. In here you can enjoy matcha tea and yokan (azuki bean dessert).
The entrance and exit to Sanzen-in are separate so If you go ahead, you will not be able to come back here, so drink matcha before continuing.

2. Seiren-in 青蓮院
This is recommended for those who want to experience a tea ceremony rather than a casual matcha drink. Special viewing periods are held in spring and autumn every year, when the formal tea room is open to the public.
The highlight is the 60 sliding door paintings(Fusuma). They are absolutely beautiful. I would love to visit this temple!

3. Renge-in 蓮華寺
A group of about 300 stone Buddhas is a highlight of this temple. The garden here has the pillars of the hall as picture frames, and when you look at it, you feel as if you are looking at a masterpiece. Recommended for those who want to enjoy the garden and tea at a leisurely pace, as there are few people here.

Nanzen-ji is a famous dry landscape garden, and the Hojo Garden is a hidden gem where you can relax and enjoy matcha tea and sweets. Feel the cool air and the sound of cascading water in the waterfall room. (Closed 12pm-1pm)

5. D&department Kyoto
If you want to enjoy a casual maccha tea, this is the place to go. The café is located on the grounds of a temple called Honzan Bukko-ji, where you can enjoy tea and sweets as well as set meals. In autumn, the temple’s symbolic gingko trees turn yellow, and I have been there and found it very beautiful!

The quiet garden is also a good place for meditation. Relax and get away from your daily life. Regular cafés are of course good, but try something a little different.
