【Western Japan】A Guide to Delicious Fish in Japan & the Best accommodation for Seafood Lovers
Japan is known for eating fish frequently, even on a global scale. You can enjoy various ways of eating fish, including sushi and sashimi with raw fish, as well as grilled and simmered preparations.
Here, I will introduce some Japanese fish names you should know and a few regions where you can enjoy fresh and delicious fish!
Here is a list of various fish names in Japanese and their English equivalents:
- 鮪 – Maguro(Tuna)
- 中トロ – Chutoro (Medium-fatty Tuna)
- 鯛 – Tai (Sea bream)
- 鯖 – Saba (Mackerel)
- 鰯 – Iwashi (Sardine)
- 鰤 – Hamachi (Yellowtail)
- かんぱち – Kanpachi (Greater Amberjack)
- 鰻 – Unagi (Eel)
- 雲丹 – Uni (Sea Urchin)
Other types of fish
- 鯵 – Aji (Horse Mackerel)
- 鰹 – Katsuo (Bonito)
- 鱈 – Tara (Cod)
- 𩸽 – Hokke (Alaska Pollock)

There is a guesthouse run by a young couple along the sea near Kyoto’s famous sights Amanohashidate“天橋立” and Inenofunaya“伊根の舟屋”. At our cozy guesthouse, you can enjoy fresh seafood caught at a nearby fishing port. You can also experience “hamagai”, where you buy fish directly from fishermen, and experience the way of life that is unique to a Japanese fishing port town.

3. オーテの宿 – Ote no yado
This is a rental inn located on Megijima, which can be reached in about 20 minutes by ferry from Takamatsu Port.
On the island surrounded by the sea, you can try your hand at fishing and growing local specialties such as mandarin oranges and olives. For breakfast, the hostess will prepare a Japanese set meal made with local vegetables and fish. Please enjoy the island time where time passes slowly.
